about

I wrote this back in 2018 before the pandemic and during a tumultuous time in my nation. A lot of things were changing and coming to light and I constantly felt this imagery of "drowning" while observing marginalized groups of people around me. Voices were stifled, ideas were ignored, people were pitted against each other, the environment was failing. It was a bad dream we couldn't wake up from where the world was being swallowed up in an ocean of fear and doubt.

lyrics

Drowning

Verse 1
There’s a little bluebird flying around and it can’t be silenced no matter how many times you knock it down.
There’s one little letter sitting in a square that’s taken the place of all the people talking out there.
We’re going down, down, down

Chorus:
We’re (drowning...)
In the cold stale water from a broken tap that our predecessors left behind
(Drowning...)
In a pool of lies trickling out of a fountain full of hate in disguise.
Going (down, down, down)

Verse 2
There’s a brand new sheriff, who rode into town and we can’t escape the screaming that echos off the sides of this wall.
It’s a real tall cliff and we’re all lining up but we’re low on chutes so some are gonna have to take the fall.
Going (down, down, down)

Chorus
We’re (drowning...)
In the lukewarm water, all that’s left to squander in a sea of dignity
(Drowning...)
In a wave of sorrow from the tears collecting at our mothers feet
Going (down, down, down)

Outro chorus:
(Drowning) drowning, gasping for air nobody cares
(Drowning) drowning, tired of treading the water my sister my brothers
(Drowning) drowning, there isn’t much time, please throw us a line
(Drowning) drowning, (can’t find the surface somebody save us) -
